Live updates: Trump tariffs could take effect tomorrow

  • President Donald Trump’s threatened tariffs on China, Canada and Mexico are expected to take effect tomorrow, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed today. Goods from China could be subjected to a 10% tariff, while those from Mexico and Canada could come under tariffs of 25%. Trump said yesterday that he’s “in the process” of implementing the trade sanctions on China and left the door open to including oil in those tariffs.
  • Trump continues to deal with fallout over his implication yesterday that diversity, equity and inclusion programs could have been the cause of Wednesday night’s plane crash. Separately, his Defense Intelligence Agency activities related to Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Black History Month and other such observances as part of the administration’s efforts to scrap federal diversity, equity and inclusion programs.
  • Trump’s purge of the FBI’s leadership continues with more firings, including the assistant director in charge of the high-profile Washington field office.
  • Trump’s Cabinet picks are progressing, with former North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum confirmed yesterday to be interior secretary. Three of Trump’s most vulnerable Cabinet nominees — Tulsi Gabbard, Kash Patel and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. — testified yesterday before Senate committees, where they were largely met with tough lines of questioning.
