Live updates: Auschwitz liberation 80th anniversary

  • Auschwitz survivors will be joined by world leaders today to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi German death camp.
  • Among the leaders expected to be in attendance are German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Britain’s King Charles, French President Emmanuel Macron and Israeli Education Minister Yoav Kisch.
  • This is likely to be one of the last such events attended by those who personally survived the horrors of Auschwitz, which Nazi Germany set up in occupied Poland during World War II.
  • More than 1.1 million people, mostly Jews, died in gas chambers or from starvation, cold and disease at Auschwitz before Soviet troops arrived at the gates on Jan. 27, 1945. Some six million Jews were killed across German-occupied Europe from 1941 to 1945.
